Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:

Describe the major functions of English in a global context;
2.
Give reasons (social, political, historical etc.) for the existence of different varieties of English;
3.
Identify the major varieties of English and some sounds, words, grammar and discourse patterns that characterise them;
4.
Discuss the impact of the spread of English on the structure, status and function of other languages and the communities that use them;
5.
Describe some communication and ethical problems arising from the global status of English
